By now, we have all probably heard about maskne (contraction of mask and acne). If not, it is a new buzz word born in 2020 that describes acne that may occur because of wearing face masks. This new condition resulted in a surge of anti-acne skincare shopping.
But the anti-acne skincare market was already on the rise, even before wearing a mask on a daily basis was the norm. It mainly concerns teenagers and young adults, but also adults over 30s who still battle with hormonal or cystic acne.
Almost all cosmetic brands have their own line of anti-acne or anti-imperfection treatments. Many of them contain one of these active ingredients : benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, zinc or sulfur. And they come in several textures and formulas too (liquid, gel, cream, etc).
One type of treatment that has been growing in the last few years is patch treatment. Just like under-eye patches can treat dark circles, these little dots will treat imperfections. Here are a few of the popular ones that can be found on the market :
The use is pretty simple. Apply the patch on the spot or imperfection and (depending on the product) wait until it dissolves or remove after the recommended time.
If these patches are quite popular as they are, some brands wanted to go a step further and make them cool and fun. This goes alongside the acne-positivity movement and the idea that imperfections should not be hidden but accepted and even celebrated with cute patches. Let’s have a look at six brands on this particular segment :
As the name describes it, these are yellow star-shaped patches. They come in cute refillable boxes. The brand often create limited edition in different colors. The latest one being rainbow version to celebrate gay-pride.
Sold at Ulta. The brand has patches in pink heart-shape, star-shape with tea tree oil or marijuana leaf-shape containing CBD.
Flower power acne patches. Colorful and very popular on social media. Tip from the brand : after you’re done, peel the glass diamonds off and use to decorate other items you own.
A mix of transparent and decorated patches with two different sizes in each pack.
These patches target spots with charcoal, salicylic acid and tomato extract. Black and red dots are equally effective in fighting imperfections and contain 95% natural ingredients.
South Korean brand with a range of white heart-shaped patches.
